Day 68: Toronto Sightseeing

Food, food and more food. That was what was on the agenda for the first day. We happened to arrive on the right Saturday. Not only was there the usual Saturday farmer's market, but also a Chinatown food festival, the "Hot and Spicy food festival" and "Taste of the Danforth," the biggest food festival of the year drawing about 1 million people each day. For us, it was heaven.

We started off with a small tour of Gaspar's neighbourhood

and took the subway

down to the farmer's market, where we had to exhibit a lot of restraint in not going broke buying the freshest fruits, vegetables, baking, cheese, honey and meat. It was pretty tough work for two hungry cyclists, but was made a little bit easier by the plethora of samples.

We fooled the woman into thinking that we were taking a picture to see how it looked on.

Purple peppers don't taste very good.

From there it was onto the "Hot and Spicy food festival," which also gave us an opportunity to tour the vibrant Harbourfront.

By then we were itching to head to Danforth Street to take part in the festivities. It was crazy, fun mayhem. And there was just so much food. Most of it was Greek food, as Danforth Street falls in "Little Greece," but there was also cuisine from India, China, Japan and Thailand to tempt the taste buds.

This last one is lamb liver, heart, and sweet breads, wrapped in intestines. Some of you may be surprised to hear that its stall had one of the longest lines at the festival.

Walking from one end of the festival took Brandon and I 2 1/2 hours. Thankfully the Subway was there to meet us and wisk us back to Gaspar's to recuperate for the next day's sight seeing.
