Day 71: Wine Tour

This was a nice little reminder of home. We didn't know they make syrup on Quadra.

Hamilton is just a mess to navigate if you’re unfamiliar with the city. The streets twist and turn and change names rapidly. The map provided only lists about 1/3 of the street names. Needless to say it’s the perfect recipe for getting lost. Which we did, a number of times in our attempts to get to the Niagara peninsula.

We did eventually make it, and started the tour off with a bang. We visited “The Thirty Bench Winery" first where we soon befriended Jan, our host for the tastings. Being the el cheapos that we are, we opted to forgo the $10 tasting flight and instead chose the free flight. After ensuing conversation however, Jan offered us the $10 flight for free. We’d like to think that it was our supreme knowledge of wine that moved her. But really, it was just our stories of 5000km of saddle sores and tents. Either way, we were highly appreciative.

Sommelier Jan, providing us with our courtesy tasting.

Our good luck didn’t end there. After a few forgettable wineries we realized that it was already 3:00pm and we still were still nowhere near the infamous Niagara on the Lake so we decided to b-line it to the posh estates of the area. For some reason we stopped at the unknown (to us anyway) Konzelmann Estate Winery where we figured we’d have a lightening quick visit. Fortunately, the small talk could not be avoided and after hearing of our trip and our interest in the reisling the supportive salesman gave us a bottle for free. Entering Konzelmann winery.
One bottle of Konzelmann reisling, priceless.

We breezed by the big name estates and headed back to Hamilton where we once again enjoyed a fabulous bbq dinner at Sara’s (sorry for putting an “h” in you name in yesterday’s blog entry Sara).Massey, after she had gotten to know Brandon a little bit. Unfortunately neither of them were ready for the photo.
