Day 97: Riviere au Renaud - St. Georges du Malbai

km today: 59.99
total km: 6709.1

The campground was eerily silent when we woke up this morning and remained so even as we left. Everyone else was still in bed sleeping off hangovers. It wasn’t even that early either as we had taken our time this morning. Due to our tired bodies, especially our sore legs, we had decided to do a shorter day today.

Bidding farewell to the sea of RVs.

Though still hilly, the terrain was much more mellow, and we easily biked the first 22 km into the town of Gaspe. We are now experts on the life and times of Jaques Cartier. He landed in the then uncharted Gaspe in June of 1534 and proceeded to claim this Asian roadblock (North America) for the king of France. All it took was the erection of a wooden cross. This is just a replica....yes we were disappointed too.

We figure that he would be pretty unimpressed with the commercialization of his name. Road names are one thing, but his name is emblazened everywhere, from motels to strip malls, and his portrait is found in every town establishment, even in the restaurant bathrooms.

After a quick snack we hung out in a funky internet cafe and attempted to update the blog. The blogspot.com website was having extreme issues and we were forced to loiter elsewhere on the web, while excepting many a coffee refill. The coffee even comes with a personal sized pitcher of steamed milk. By 4:00 we were jittery and starting to regret the decision of buying and devouring a 50% off 1 kg blueberry pie. It was time to do some serious detoxifying.

Riding out of Gaspe we found these, the manufacturing site of wind mill propellers. It's hard to gain perspective until you stand right next one.

A couple of hours of riding was not quite enough to cleanse ourselves, but all we had time for before the sun disappeared in what we’re sure would have been one of the more spectacular sunsets we’ve seen had the northern half of the Gaspe peninsula not blocked our view.
